AI & SD-WAN Exchange set to be key 2024 trends, expert says

Dr Thomas King, CTO of DE-CIX, one of the largest internet exchange operators, shares his technology predictions for 2024, including the future of AI

Reflecting on 2023 so far, significant technological strides have been made and the pace of innovation has been nothing short of remarkable. From the widespread adoption of generative AI to advancements in quantum computing, a high bar for technological progress has been set. These advancements have revolutionised the approach to technology and demanded the re-evaluating of company strategies and infrastructure development.

Looking ahead to 2024, Dr Thomas King, CTO of DE-CIX, one of the world’s largest internet exchange operators, anticipates that we will witness further evolution in the interconnected business world which is driven by a blend of AI, cloud computing and network optimisation.

Here, Dr King looks into 2023 trends further, and how he predicts this will shape technological advancements in the new year.

2024 tech predictions from Dr Thomas King, CTO of DE-CIX

One of the key trends to watch in 2024 will be the rise of AI interconnect services aimed at optimising low-latency AI delivery. With the increasing availability of generative AI models, businesses recognise the need for enhanced connectivity to cloud-based AI services. This underscores the need for companies to optimise data pathways and establish direct, secure connections with external AI models or service offerings. AI interconnect services will become a central pillar in all AI strategies, particularly as AI-driven tools like chatbots and analytics enter the fray.

Another significant trend to look out for is integrating AIOps, or AI for IT operations, in network environments. As networks become increasingly complex, AIOps is emerging as a crucial tool for simplifying network management through automation, predictive analytics and root cause analysis. This is particularly important for network engineers grappling with the challenges of a distributed workforce and a multitude of new devices. The adoption of AIOps is set to accelerate, with its market forecasted to triple by 2028, highlighting its potential to enhance network performance while reducing operational costs.

Looking further into 2024, we anticipate the advent of the SD-WAN Exchange and the challenges of securing communications in the post-quantum era. The SD-WAN Exchange will revolutionise how enterprises connect to different SD-WAN technologies, offering seamless integration with multi-cloud scenarios and optimising data pathways. With the increasing availability of quantum computing over the last few years, significant challenges have emerged in securing confidential communications. In addressing these security concerns, the development of quantum encryption technology, particularly Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), will play a crucial role in safeguarding private communication channels.

What’s more, the global expansion of Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) will enable enterprises to outsource the building and management of their wide area networks, furthering digital transformation on a worldwide scale. These trends not only highlight the rapid evolution of technology but also underscore the need for businesses to adapt their infrastructure and processes to keep pace with their digital evolution and the changing demands of their customers.
