Leading Companies Seek to Unlock AI Mobile Opportunities
Samsung is soon to announce its plans for 2024 as part of Galaxy Unpacked, stating that it will open a new era of Mobile AI.
On January 17th 2024, the electronics company will host the event in San Jose, California, as well as live streaming it worldwide on its website and YouTube channel. It has said that it hopes to unveil the latest premium Galaxy innovations, which will include providing an all-new mobile experience powered by AI.
This teaser is part of a wider global reaction as enterprises are increasingly using AI to innovate mobile devices and launch more AI-enabled smartphones in 2024.
Samsung teases AI smartphone launch
In line with the announced event, it is expected that Samsung will unveil its latest line of Galaxy mobile phones with AI functions. The company has stated that the handsets will offer an all-new mobile experience powered by AI, with AI and machine learning running solely on a device or working alongside cloud services.
The rumoured S24 smartphone series is expected to include powerful new AI features, in addition to other routine upgrades. Samsung’s new devices are likely to be the first new phones to include Galaxy AI, which aims to offer a comprehensive mobile AI experience.
According to Forbes, the new handsets will be powered by Samsung's Exynos 2400 chipset, or a tweaked Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform tailored for the Galaxy S24. The Qualcomm large language model (LLM) in particular can run up to 20 tokens per second, which has been hailed as one of the fastest in the smartphone industry.
This speculation suggests that mobile devices and smartphones are set to become more AI-led in 2024.
Google, Gemini and Gen AI: Dominating the mobile market
Alongside Samsung’s upcoming announcements, Google has also made a huge bid for AI smart device development. Its launch of Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, which was heavily praised for being the first smartphone with inbuilt AI, is now running Gemini Nano, with more updates expected to come.
The tech giant’s launch of Gemini AI at the end of 2023 has been widely celebrated as its largest and most capable AI model yet. According to Google, Gemini has sophisticated multi-modal capabilities and is able to master human-style conversations, language and content, as well as understand and interpret images, code, drive data and analytics, in addition to being used by developers to create new AI apps and APIs.
Google says that Gemini Nano running on Pixel 8 Pro offers several advantages, which include helping to prevent sensitive data from leaving the phone and offering the ability to use features without a network connection.
The company says: “In addition to Gemini Nano now running on-device, the broader family of Gemini models will unlock new capabilities for the Assistant with Bard experience [in early 2024]. Alongside generative AI models, Pixel devices use other AI-based tools to help you do more.”
Indeed, generative AI (Gen AI) and the introduction of these new devices is anticipated to revolutionise the smartphone industry and the wider mobile sector in 2024. Research conducted by Counterpoint found in December 2023 that more than one billion Gen AI smartphones are expected to be shipped during 2024-2027.
The survey found that the share of Gen AI smartphones was 4% of the market in 2023 - with this expected to double in 2024 alone. By 2027, the organisation anticipates that Gen AI smartphone shares will reach 40%, citing Samsung and Qualcomm as “immediate leaders” of current product offerings.
It remains to be seen how this outlook will continue to evolve in 2024 as AI devices continue to expand.
