What is network slicing?

Network slicing is one of the most advanced 5G capabilities that enables partition of a single network infrastructure into multiple virtual networks, each tailored to specific requirements such as performance, functionality, reliability, etc. It allows logical isolation within a single network, accommodating varied requirements without deploying separate infrastructures. This capability is pivotal as IoT devices require support for a spectrum of service demands, from low latency for security systems to high bandwidth for streaming.

Spectrum is THE most precious and scarce resource, and network slicing enables network operators to efficiently allocate resources while simultaneously reshaping business models for Communication Service Providers (CSPs). It enables customised pricing models and rapid deployment of tailored services, fostering opportunities for revenue growth across industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and entertainment.

What are the challenges around 5G network slicing?

There are significant technical and practical operational challenges to the implementation of network slicing.

Technical complexities arise from the need for seamless integration across various network domains, like radio access and core networks. To create end to end network slice, sophisticated virtualisation and orchestration mechanisms are required that cuts across multiple technologies and OEM platforms. Resource allocation, sharing, and dynamic management also present hurdles, requiring robust algorithms and automation to adapt to fluctuating demands.

Legacy network systems present another challenge, hindering the introduction of new services. For example, upgrading to 5G Standalone Architecture requires extensive restructuring, especially in RAN and transport networks. Standardisation efforts by 3GPP offer a framework, yet interoperability among vendors and evolving standards hinder progress.

Although network slicing promises customisation and efficiency, it involves navigating an environment rife with technical, operational, and market challenges. To unlock its full potential in 5G, a dedicated commitment to standardisation, automation, and infrastructure modernisation is crucial.
